Your journey at ECU continues! Sophomore programs are designed to provide support and connections for second year students. We want you to get more involved and engaged with campus, secure your academic degree plan, and develop a personal identity and purpose.
Sophomore programs will help you:
- Avoid the Sophomore Slump.
- Enhance friendships and connections made during your first year with faculty, staff, and students.
- Become more involved on campus.
- Develop a successful academic degree plan and career path.
- Prompt usage of campus resources
Academic Planning & Support
- Meet with your academic advisor to ensure you are on the right track
- Consider Study Abroad programs which can vary from several weeks to year-long.
- Make a personal connection with a faculty member.
- Look into and utilize the academic support services like the Pirate Academic Success Center, University Writing Center, or visit a reference librarian and Joyner Library.
Career Planning
- Visit Career Services. Take inventories to find out what types of careers or majors would be best for you.
- Explore possible majors and learn about the careers associated with them.
- Learn about internship opportunities.
Getting Involved on Campus and in the Community

Become involved in extracurricular activities
- Visit OrgSync to explore volunteer opportunities and for information on student organizations.
- Participate in fun and free events sponsored by SAB.
- Become involved in your college or major organizations.
- Explore Greek Life opportunities.
- Participate in programs by Campus Recreation and Wellness or play intramurals.

Take Care of Yourself
- Take care of your physical well-being by eating regularly and getting enough sleep. Also get physical exercise at the Eakin Student Recreation Center, get involved in intramural sports, or take a group exercise class!
- Visit the Center for Counseling and Student Development.
- Realize that the sophomore slump is normal. Identify if your schedule is too demanding or if you are over-committed.
